~About the project~

Natas Kaupas, as we hope you know, is one of the godfathers of street skating. A pure talent who’s artistic legacy spans past his legendary status in skating itself. If you’ve ever ollied of a curb or board slid a handrail, you’re speaking in the language he helped invent. If you were a kid in the 80’s or 90’s you might have known about his panther boards before his name.

Grime knew about the panther too. He attempted to mimic his amazing skating, he asked his mom for haircut like Natas’ (did not turn out like he dreamed), he cut his Converse hightop down and duct taped them, and he collected his boards, shirts and stickers. Skating was a Reason for Living.  Decades later, Natas messaged him out of the blue: “Will you paint a custom dress shirt for me?” Turns out he liked an envelope Grime had drawn on when buying a board from him years ago so much he kept it. Of course, Grime was honored by his request of a dragon! “It was such a surprise. Knowing his history of board graphics and personal art style it seemed like such a strange ask- but I was super flattered,” says Grime. That was the springboard for the thought, ‘I wonder if he’d make a board with me…’

“After that, I figured, I have a rapport now. I’m going to shoot my shot. I told him, “I think we should do a board together. I will do the artwork, get the decks made and printed, list them online and get them shipped. I will handle everything.”

That’s how NATAS X GRIME happened!
